1. Patents are a contrarian indicator, perhaps a legal arbitrage strategy over an innovation strategy.

   Hewlett-Packard under Carly Fiorina (a resounding failure) is one example. Fiorina’s main snake-oil distraction when asked for leadership credentials is to claim the huge increase of patents under her tenure.
