So, I won’-t blog anymore on BetFair (other than re-publishing up this post) till they fix their 2 frontpages and put back the direct links to the prediction markets on politics, finance, and the other socially valuable issues.

APPENDIX: Here’-s my July 2008 message to the CFTC where I said that TradeSports and BetFair are (”-were”-, in the case of BetFair, now) doing good, and sending some of the liquidity (which they acquire with sports) on the socially valuable prediction markets. See also what I said to BusinessWeek.
When the CFTC look at the 2 BetFair frontpages, they will now get to the conclusion that Chris Masse is an idiot, who was probably paid to talk up BetFair.

It’s a bit unfortunate for you, Chris. Personally I think their main menu sux. And hiding the socially valuable prediction markets from the public doesn’t seem like a smart move to me. But this is betfair.

I don’t think you’ll get what you want though. The moment you gave preference to free speech over, let’s call it “betfair’s way”, you probably became their enemy. Hope I’m wrong, but this is how the brain of a “not so gifted” person works. You’re either with us or you’re against us. I should know, I always wanted to be a criminal. Alas, it turned out I was too smart.
@medemi: They are making a mistake. Many people view BetFair as “sport gambling” only, and that last move gave them corn to grind.
I know it’s a mistake. They couldn’t even get the financial markets off the ground so they must be thinking people are only interested in sports (gambling). I’m not going to help them, besides they wouldn’t listen to me anyway.
The menu defaults to “popular sports” and should default to “all sports”.
They got this wrong as well.
You might just get what you want after all.
Companies go through different phases, and what was once needed to kick-start these markets is going to work against Betfair going forward. Chris must be very disappointed in betfair. I guess we all had our share. Chris is right though – there’s huge potential for “socially valuable” markets, and with the customer base betfair already have it should be an easy exercise. But it’s not, because the current management will manage this company exactly the same way they have been doing for the past 6 years or so. And blame others when things don’t work out the way they intended. They need to focus on the consumer, but they can’t do it.
@Ed Murray: I am just asking that they link to the non-sport prediction markets from their 2 frontpages. I don’t think I am asking too much.
